Dir W. A. Barton, S.M., will hold a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Wairoa next week. Mr and Mrs Julius Caesar returned from Auckland by the Moura yesterday. Captain Hutton, of the Omapere, was a through passenger by the Moura yesterday, going South to join the former steamer.

Messrs J. A. Harding and J. C. Parker, who drove through to Wairoa on Thursday, returned early last evening. They state that the roads are at present in fairly good order. Mr E, Cussens returned from Auckland yesterday. ■■ Mr J. M. Hussey left for Napier last evening. ! Mr G. C. Lyttelton, who succeeds Mr Hussey in tho local Customs, arrived from the South by the Zealandia on Saturday morning. ' 'Messrs Wo;s? find. Memmott, the celebrated billiard players, wore through passengers yesterday by' the Moura. Miss Spence, of Tolago Bay, has received her appointment as probationer on ;:i;s nqrsing staff in the Wellington Hospital, and has entered upon her duties. Mrs and the Misses Seymour left for Auckland by the Zealandia on Saturday. They intend to spend some time at Rotorua.

E. Lougher, who wont from this district to seek employment in that country; At St. Mary’s Church, yesterday morning mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father O’Connor. The choir, under Mr Palairet, sang Turner’s Mass, which was given in a most pleasing manner. As an offertory solo, Miss Katie Flynn, of Hawera, gave an excellent rendering of “ O .Salutaris," composed bv her sister, Miss Flynn. In the evening she also sang .“ Eternal Rest ” (Piccolomini) with great success, The Rev. Father Crotty, of Christchurch, preached p.n eloquent 'sermon on the subject of “ The Incarnation.” Mrs Orr sang very prettily “ Regina Coela.” There was a large congregation at each service. The many friends of the Rev. Father Mulvihill will regret to, hear that that gentleman is at present in very indifferent health, and his medical advisers deem it necessary for Him to take an extended holiday. We understand that Father Mulvihill intends to proceed to the South Sea Islands and Sydney, and before his departure from Gisborne, his congrega- 1 tion will make him a presentation of a : purse of sovereigns. We trust that the i trip will prove beneficial to his health, i and that he will shortly be able to resume i his clerical duties in this district, where < ho has labored bo long and faithfully. ;
