A bank holiday will be observed to-day. The Hospital Ball Committee meets tonight at 7.30 at the County Council Chambers. Attention is directed to the advertisement of the Excelsior Boot Depot appearing in this issue. Captain Edwin wired at noon yesterday : “ Moderate to strong westerly winds ; glass fall; tides moderate, and very cold night.” Messrs J. W. Bright, A. F. Kennedy, W. Miller, Allan Taylor, C. F. Lewis, and J. "Whim-ay have addressesto the Borough electors in another column. The East Coast Mounted Rifles will hold a parado in service uniform, with carbines, in the Drillshed at 7.30 this evening. Full-dress tunics mil be issued after parade. Mr Barton, S.M., granted the following renewals of Old Age Pensions yesterday: G. H. Wilson, £ls ; James-Jackson, £ls ; and William Munro, ,£l4. An application by Robert Crawford was refused. At a meeting , of the Licensing Bench yesterday a conditional license for the Matawhero sale yards for the 25th inst., was granted to J. H. Aislabie. Leave of absence was granted to H. Martin, of the Gisborne Hotel, J. Martin being in charge.
At a committee meeting of the Gisborne Mutual Improvement Society last evening, the syllabus for the month of May was drawn up as follows : —May 6th, debate ; May 13th, ladies’ evening ; May 20th, address “ Prohibition and Remedies for the Liquor Question," Mr W. D. Lysnar ; May 27th, Journal. Some very- interesting games were played in the Domino Tournament at the N.Z. Natives' Association Club rooms last night. Arch. Pool beat J. Blair after a very close game ; H. Lewis scored a victory over A. Pritchard ; W. Andrew beat It. Henzler. This was the best game of the evening; both players were seen in their best form, but in the final game, W. Andrew proved too much for his opponent.
Mr Innis has developed some splendid photographs, which Mr W. D. Lysnar had taken last Thursday of the two suggested sources of water supply at Waihirere and Mangarueke, the sources of which Mr Mestayor examined when hero, and is shortly to report upon. Anybody desirous of getting a good idea of the sources without having the trouble of going there will have an opportunity of seeing them in Mr Good’s window, as some of the photographs will be on view there to-day. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday a couple of civil cases were disposed of by Mr Barton, S.M. W. G. Foster claimed from Louisa Pardoe £l7 4s 6d for alleged worrying of sheep by defendant’s dog. Mr DeLautour appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr R. N. Jones for the defendant. After hearing the evidence, His Worship gave judgment for the amount claimed, less a deduction of £2 for sheep that had only been wounded. The costs wore £3 12s 6d. In the case Clayton Bros. v. William Cooper, a disputed claim for labor and material supplied, judgment was reserved until Wednesday. Mr L. Rees appeared for plaintiff, and Mr DeLautour for defendant.
At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, it was resolved that the opening of the season bo oh Saturday week, May 4tli, and that three rounds be played for the Senior Banner championship. The draw resulted as follows: —May 4th, City v. Huia; May 11, Haiti v. West Enel; May 18, City v. Haiti; May 25, West End v. Huia ; May 30, City v. West End ; June 1, Haiti v. Huia. Discussion took place as to the advisability of having some of the matches played on Thursdays, and it was finally decided that a match in the first two rounds be played on a Thursday, City and West End meeting on the 30th prox., and Haiti and Huia in the second round. Messrs Miller, Eaton, and Hawkins were appointed a Postponement Committee.
The Gisborne Mutual Improvement Society held the first of their weekly meetings last evening, when a paper by Mrs W. H. Trimble on “ The Beauty of Socialism ” was read. Mr R. N. Jones (President) occupied the chair. The gaper was an excellent one, and showed the beauty that pertained to socialism. Some discussion followed the paper, among the speakers being Mesdames Jones and Scott, and Messrs Grubb, Nasmith, and Jones. One new member was elected, and five more proposed. " Owing to 'the ltev.
