[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night.

James Bun-ell and James Henry Cate pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court to-day to burglary of the premises of Nathan and Co. on the 13th inst. They were remanded to the Supreme Court tomorrow for sentence. Frederick Windward, with several aliases, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment at the Magistrate’s Court to-day for attempting to swindle. He represented that he was a manufacturer of patent medicines, and induced Percy Adamson to come from Opunake under a supposed engagement to sell medicine in Australia. On arrival at Wellington Windward wanted Adamson to givo aniadvance of £2O on account of passage money and other expenses, but the swindle being suspected, the police were informed. The Government have purchased from the Assets Bealisation Board the Mangatoro estate, 19,550 acres, near Dannevirke, at £4 10s an acre.

It is probable that Mr Walker, Minister of Education, will accompany the Premier to Melbourne next Saturday.

The Premier is advised that Private Mayo, New Zealand Artillery, a son of Mr Oliver Mayo, of Devonport, Auckland, has died at Ivakemoer, the result of an accident.

George Finnester, aged 70, a boatbuilder at the Pelorous Sound, is missing. He left Picton on Thursday, and his boat was found 18 miles from Picton. There was no’trace of Finnester.

Henry Hunt, storekeeper, of Karori, who was thrown from his bicycle in Majorbanks street on the 13th inst., died on Saturday night without regaining consciousness.

New Plymouth, last night. The Coal Commissioners held a sitting this morning. Evidence was given with respect to the opening up of the Mokau mines.

Auckland, last night. The Hon. Mr McGowan and his Secretary left Onehunga yesterday for Wellington. Sir Maurice O’Borkc leaves for Australia to-day to attend the opening of the Federal Parliament.

Napier, last night. Owing to an informality, Mr W. T. Dennett, the present Mayor of Hastings, had to retire from the Mayoral contest, one of his nominators not being on the burgess’ roll. Not wishing to take advantage of the oversight, Mr C. A. Fitzroy, the other candidate, has ’ generously retired, and both will accordingly be renominated.
