The question of the over-supply young teachers in the Wanganui education district has (says the Standard) caused a great deal of anxiety to those members of the Wanganui Education Board who have given the subject any consideration, and the time has arrived when some decisive action will have to be taken in the matter. There are a verylarge number of pupil teachers in the employ of the Board who have little prospect of promotion for a long time to come, and yet the supply of candidates for such positions shows no sign of decreasing. One of the first steps which will probably be taken will be to cease appointing cadets, and in that respect the Board has been putting the brake on of late. It is also suggested that the system of staffing the schools in force in Otago should bo adopted, so that instead of appointing a pupil teacher to a school where the attendance is too large for a master to manage, an assistant mistress should be appointed. This would give a large number of pupil teachers who arc out of their time an opportunity of getting remunerative appointments, and also remove the necessity for appointing cadets so that the supply,of pupil teachers should be kept up. Of course, in view of the operations of the Royal Commission on teachers’ salaries and the staffing of schools, nothing definite will be done, but we have no doubt that it will be found that reforms on the lines we have mentioned will be initiated.
