LABOR CONFERENCE.

Dunedin, last night.

The Trades Congress to-day carried resolutions against the issue of totalisator 1 permits on Labor Day; that Labor Day 1 be a compulsory holiday ; that the ! Government pay all their employees ordinarv wages on Labor Day. They affirmed the undesirability of New Zealand joining the Commonwealth; ' that the Govern- ’ ment be urged to build workmen’s homes in close proximity to the towns and cities, ] and to grant easy facilities to and fro by means of train or boat: that the Govern- ' •incut be urged to make provision for com- ' polling all tradesmen taking orders for tailoring to employ tailors or tailoresses, such work to be done in workshops belonging to the firm ■ taking the orders; to amend the Health Act, relieving parents of the necessity of a sworn declaration and payment of stamp duty when applying for certificates of exemption ; that the Municipal Councils bo urged to press forward mnuicipalisation of trams, gas, electric lighting, baths, lecture halls, and places of amusement. Later. —Resolutions were earned that Government appoint inspectors of scaffolding so ns to ensure the safely of life and limb of workmen engaged in tho construction of new buildings: that the Minister of Railways be urged to equalise the haulage rates of minerals on railways; that Government be urged to compel all mineowners to erect fans for tho purpose of ventilating mines; that Government bo asked to bring into operation a Workers’ Compensation for Accidents Bill; that the various trades and labor councils be. requested to endeavor to organise agricultural laborers throughout the couutry districts of the colony; that it bo a recommendation that each trade council forward not more than six items for the order : paper; that Mr Hornsby, M.H.R., be re--1 quested to introduce his bill fq provont women being employed in unhealthy occupations ttho latter, it was explained, ! had special’'"reference to linotypes'and
