SPORTING

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 4. At the reading of the card on the Doncaster very little business resulted. There was business on Wakeful at 5 to 2 ; 3 to 1 was wanted on Australia, Sagacity, Ferryman and Aurous ; 10 to 1 on Severity, Fulminate, San Fran ; 16, Cup, Wakeful; 4 to 1 on Clean Sweep, La Carabine and San Fran.

A.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. (Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. There is every prospect of fine weather for the opening of the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting on Monday next, and the meeting in every respect promises to be a record one. The course is in good order, and some fast times should be recorded. The following are my selections for the various events :

The programme opens with the Tradesman's Handicap, 1.) miles, for which a field of 14 have accepted, and Dayntree 8.2, on his recent form, should about win; but a pair that will be troublesome are Dartmoor and Rosella, and I shall expect to see them in the other places. The Gisborne-owned En Hakkore has the handy impost of 7.5, but I think she will find the opposition a bit too strong. The Easter Handicap is the chief event of the day, and when the acceptances closed, twenty-three horses were left in, so that a large field is certain to face the starter. Okoari is still a warm favorite at 5 to 2, with Rosella next in demand. This .'pair are decidedly well in, and, at the weights, should be very closo up at the finish. Hohoro, Ideal, Dayntree, and The Needle have also been well supported. However, the race bears a very open aspect, and the handicapper, Mr Evett, appears to have pretty well concealed the winner. A horse I have a great liking for is The Needle, 7.9, and I shall select him to win, with Okoari, Hohoro, and Rosella closo up. The Gisborne-owned mare Materoa has many fanciers, but as she only arrived and has had little work I do not expect to sec her gain a place. The supporters of the huia colors aro anxious to see the daughter of Torpedo turn the tables on Ideal, and it will bo a very popular win if she gets home in front of her field.

There are eight horses left in the Handicap Hurdles, and Kaimatc, Cannongato, and Cavaliero should fill the places in the order named. Old Voltigcur, with 10.8, Kr nicely in, and should be handy at the finish.

A field of sixteen has accepted for the Eden Handicap, seven furlongs. Yal Ilosa (8.4) should be the hardest to beat, but En Ilakkore and Hastings arc a pair that will be very handy at the finish. Solo and Firefly arc also well in. My selection is Val Rosa, En Hakkore, and Hastings, and they should finish in that order.

In the Onslow Stakes Sparkling Water reads as well as anything, and Mcnura and Maroon and Gold should be her closest attendants.

There is a field of seven in the Pony Handicap, seven furlongs, and this should be won by Orange and Blue, though Lena and Ivan will run well up. A largo field of fifteen figure ■on the card for the Railway Handicap. Should St. Elmo start, and be in anything like form, he should win. Solo appoars to mo to be one of the best treated horses in the race, and I shall name him as tho winner, with Yal Rosa, and St. Elmo as the other place-getters. Gisborne is well represented at the mooting, having Materoa, En Hakkore, Ivan, and Evening Wonder competing. The last named does not figure in the Hurdle Race on the first day, but will probably bo out on Tuesday. Evening Wonder is in good should run well. Alf. Williams will have the mount on the Wonderland gelding. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Forty-seven was omitted from the list of acceptances for the A.R.C. Hurdle Race.
