WHATAUPDKO ROAD BOARD
The monthly meeting was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Matthews (Chairman), Joyce, Sievwright, McConnell and W. Eanger. Mr E. Ling wrote referring attention to the condition of Wi Pere street, which was a near cut to the footbridge, and was in a very bad state for nine months of the year. Mr Joyce said that Mr and Sirs Ling had each spoken to him about the street, and he understood some arrangement had been made to form a footpath. He did not know whether it would be judicious to metal the road, as it would divert a lot of traffic that way, but he thought they should make an effort to do the footpath. The Chairman said he had promised to bring the matter up when there were funds; he thought metal should be laid down for a couple of feet wide. In reply to Mr Sievwright the Clerk said that with the accounts that day they would have a total liability of £238 os lid, with some accounts to come in for works in hand. Mr Sievwright: It is clear our funds are very limited. Mr Joyce proposed that a large hole at the place be filled up, and the' footpath made passable, the Chairman to arrange with Mr Ling to do the work. —Agreed to. In reply to a further question the Clerk said that about £230 in rates were still outstanding. A bill of £3O had been dishonored twice. Mr Sievwright thought there should be no individualising in suing—all should be treated alike. Mr Frank Duncan, Mangapapa, wrote complaining that a resolution to attend to the drain near his property had not been carried out. Mr Joyce said the road and drain were in a very bad state, and Messrs Joyce and McConnell were deputed to inspect the locality and report, with authority to put a man on. Mr Garrett wrote pointing to the seriousness of leaving drains uncleaned for a long period. It was said that Cliffordstrect was specially referred to. The Chairman : It is just a matter of funds
The matter was left to the Chairman to sec if ho could get the drain cleaned at a small sum from Fox-street along Cliffordstreot to the outlet. | Mr D. M. Orr wrote referring attention to the necosaity of cleaning out drains, and judicious expenditure on the road near his property. The Chairman said that directly they cleaned out the drain in Eussoll-street they would be bringing down tons of stuff, unless the sides were stayed. Messrs Sievwright, Ranger, and the Chairman were appointed a sub-com-mittee to inspect various drains and culverts. Mr George Phelps wrote stating that owing to the bad weather he had been unable to complete his contract in time, and he asked for an extension. The Chairman : Ho has gone out of his way to do good work ; we ought to encourage him. Mr .Joyce said he did not think any extension was required, as if he kept up good work no one would bo hard on him. Agreed to leave the matter till the work was finished. Messrs Dolcman and Co. wrote asking for a progress payment of Til. —Agreed to. A letter was received from the Agricultural Department calling attention to the new Slaughtering Act.—Received. The poundkeepor reported that he had impounded ten head of cattle and horses ; fees, T 1 ss. In regard to overdue rates, it was decided to give a final week’s notice, and sue defaulters at once.
