Sir Edward Clarke, who last year resigned his seat in the House of Commons owing to his constituents censuring him for pro-Boer utterances, has now stated that the Boers’ rejection of the generous terms offered has altered the circumstances, and he hoped that the war would be carried on to a complete and early termination.
The proposal to erect hi front of Buckingham Palace a national memorial to Queen Victoria has been endorsed by a great and representative meeting at the Mansion House. ItAvas decided to appeal for funds throughout the Empire. The King wrote to the Lord Mayor promising a thousand guineas. He approved of the proposed site, and hoped that a lasting and worthy memorial of the great Queen would be erected."’ The Rothschilds have subscribed two thousand guineas and Sir Thomas Lipton and Sir John Blundell Maple one thousand guineas each. King Edward’s abstention from sending a mission to the Vatican to announce his accession is regarded as a retaliation for Cardinal Rampollo’s Anglophobe policy. There is strong feeling in Rome against Cardinal Rampolla.
