AUCKLAND NEWS.

A COOL REQUEST.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Mr Napier, M.11.R., at the request of tho Volunteer officers, is urging Government to spend LG,OOO in the erection of a new drill hall. The officers consider thp site of the old hall unsuitable, and recommend the site belonging to the Harbor Board, adjoining the proposed Victoria Park, in which the volunteers could carry out their field manoeuvres. EIRE IN A BATTERY.

A fire in the Wailii Company’s Waikino battery destroyed the shed containing the stone-breaker. The roasted quartz from the kilns came down a wooden shoot into this shed, and set fire to the shoot, which ignited the whole building. It is probable the fire may cause the stoppage of the battery for one day, but not more.
