[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night. The Harbour Board yesterday decided to decorate the wharves on the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. It was suggested that the Duke should be asked to lay the foundation stone of Admiralty House, Auckland. The Star’s Tongan [correspondent states that on February 18th the treaty made between Mr Basil Thompson, for the English Government, and King George, for the Tongan Government, was formally ratified on behalf of both Governments. Mr Hamilton Hunter, who has been for many years in the service of the Crown at Fiji, was installed Consul by Sir George O’Brien.
The Governor and Captain Alexander arrived at Katikati on Saturday night. Jn Monday morning His Excellency started for Paeroa, and reached there last evening. Tho party left by train for the To Kuiti Plymouth and Wellington.
Napier, last night. • Johu McClusky was committed for trial at Hastings on a charge of assault with intent.
Woodville, last night. The Woodville Match, 300, 500 and 700 yards, seven shots, resulted : J. D. Wilson 96, Ballinger 95, Ingpon 93. The Marton Match, 700 yards, ten shots, resulted : Ballinger 45, Domncyan 43. In the Aggregate Match Ballinger 313 won, J. G. Wilson 291, Head 290. In the Last Try Morrison made 48, Loveday, Welch and Smaill 48. There was no tune for the Teams Match.
Palmerston North, last night. The Borough Council decided last evening to convene a meeting of local bodies between the Rangitikei and Otaki rivers for the purpose of discussing the charges made by the Valuation Department for alterations to the roll.
Masterton, this day. A fire occurred in a building owned by Mrs Cave, divided into three shops. Considerable damage was done. The water supply was used for the first time for firesuppression purposes, and proved very effective. The building was insured for £2OO in the New Zealand. Miles, tailor, was uninsured. Vibert, bookseller, had £IOO cover in tho Norwich, and the other shop was oocupied by Lewin, tobacconist. Patea, this day. At the Harbor Board meeting, the Chairman indicated that a scheme for borrowing £20,000 for further improvements would be presented shortly. The volume of imports last year and the tonnange of shipping was, lie said, the highest recorded.
Wellington, last night. Cabinet have authorised the erection of a Custom-house in Wcllingtonjon the new reclaimed land near tho railway wharf. The Railway Department has accepted tho tender of Messrs Ashby, Berg, and Co., of Christchurch, to supply' 1200 gallons of castor oil at 2s 81d per gallon. Christchurch, last night.. The inquest on Dutlieric Dohrman, who was run over at Carlton, resulted, in a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone. The Education Board has , accepted the alterations made by the Department to its proposals for tho allocation of the Parliamentary vote In aid of teachers’ salaries, and has also set up a Committee to consider the arrangements in connection with the reception by school children of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York.
Timaru, last night A widow named Ryan attempted suicide last evening by cutting her throat with a razor. Sho was taken to the hospital, and will probably recover. She had been melancholy, moping over the sudden death of her son four year's old.
A new Traders’ Association was formed last night, adopting rules based on those of tho Dunedin Association. About sixty traders have joined so far.
