" "j Dr Mason, the chief Health Officer, accompanied by Dr Pomare, visited tho ] Ohinemutu pali to-day, and called a meet- , ing of the Natives for the purpose of talk- , ing over the sanitation of the Natives’ kaingas. Dr Mason briefly introduced Dr Pomare as one of their own race, whom he had appointed as Health Officer for the Maoris for the whole colony. His duties would bo to visit and instruct (by lecture and otherwise) the Natives of both islands in sanitary laws. He pointed out how enteric fever and consumption (the latter the most deadly enemy of the race) were caused, and hoped that attention to Dr Pomaro’s instructions would produce good results.
