Christchurch, last night.
An inquest was held this morning on William Lawson, and the evidence showed that the man was addicted to drink and was drunk a,t the time of the supposed assault, and did not know wko assailed him. A verdict was returned that death was due to syncope caused by his injuries, but that there was no evidence to show how the injuiies were received. On Saturday a young man named Augustus Moore,- in the employ of Reuter’s Press Agency, gave himself up to the police. He admits embezzling £2OO belonging to the Agency. He was remanded till Tuesday,
Wellington, last night. Tho Agent-General’s cablegram to jhe Government underrate March 9th. states: “Butter, 102 s; Danish, 100 s; heavy supplies to hand, market du I '.. Cheese, 495, market lifeless. -Hemp market firm; good fair Wellington £24; stock in hand on March Ist, 774 tons; fair current Manila £23 10s, stock 18,570 tons. Cocksfoot unchanged.” Alfred Baynor, on a charge of attempted suicide, was ordered by the Magistrate to come up for sentence when called upon. The balance of the railway carriages from America left San Francisco in the Boyalist on Friday. The Government have cabled to England and India :for 2000 more doses of plague serum. A new system of fumigating vessels is to be brought into operation in New Zealand. Machines specially made for the purpose are being obtained from Australia, also a supply of a compressed material, the fumes from which will be distributed to eveiy part of the ship. The Premier is advised that Driver J. Beck, of Auckland, was severely wounded at Leichfenburg on March 3rd.
Officers have been allotted to companies of the Seventh Contingent for the present as follows : —Auckland Company : Captain A. E. Harrowell, Lieutenants Aitken, Connell, Grant, Oo”edge, and Richardson ; Wellington : Captain Johnston, Lieutenants Drury, Eorsyth, Lestrange, Cameron, and Emerson; Canterbury: Captain Coutts, Lieutenants Hamer, Overton, Wilson, and Dickenson; Otago : Cap? tain Rutherford, Lieutenants Stewart, Gane, Wilkinson, and Caulton ; Nelson: Lieutenants Brown, Whiteley, Tait, Braithwaite, and Joyce.
