THE GOVERNOR AT TAUPO.
AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME,
[GISBORNE TIMES' SPECIAL.]
Auckland, last night. His Excellency the Governor met with a most cordial reception at Taupo, especially from the Natives at Tokaanu, this being his first visit to the township. The Natives were highly delightod at the presence of our late Queen’s representative among them, and showed their hearty appreciation by the great Chief Te Heu Hen presenting His t Excellency on behalf of the natives with valuable Maori curios. In his speech the Governor referred ’to the amity of the Maoris, and hoped that both races would draw closer and closer together for the welfare of New Zealand.
Immediately the salutation in Maori fashion and speechifying' was over, an old tattooed veteran in endeavoring to get a glimpse at His Excellency and referring to the late Queen exclaimed: “ Lamentation, sorrow, and grief for my good mother, she is dead,” and then the poor old warrior indulged in a good tangi.
