ROWING.
Last evening the final heats of the Poverty Bay and Gisborne Rowing Clubs trial fours were rowed on the Taruheru river, the former over tho mile and a quarter, and the latter over the mile course. A large assemblage of rowing enthusiasts gathered at the various points of vantage, and had the pleasure of witnessing two interesting races. In each club the result was considered very open, as the crews had all done good work, besides being very evenly matched, and consequently they all had numerous admirers. The crows stroked by J. Martin and L. Sherrill were slightly better favorites than their rivals, and they both justified the confidence placed in them, each winning their respective races, after a hard struggle, by barely a length.
POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB. The following were tho crews who competed in the final: — J. Martin (str) C. Taylor (str) F. Fox (3) G. Brown (3) A. W. Kirk (2) A. Pool (2) J. Parker (bow) G. Reed (bow) The crows were sent away to an oven start, but when Warren’s jetty was reached Martin had assumed a lead of half a length, which lie had increased to a length at the footbridge. Taylor’s crew, pulling well together, had gained slightly on the leaders when the gasworks corner was reached, but despite their efforts Martin maintained liis lead, and won by a length. GISBORNE ROWING CLUB. The two competing crews in the final were:— L. Shcrriff (str) J. Lee (str) C. Freer (3) G. Holmes (8) F. Pettie (2) J. Piric (2) 0. Hansen (bow) J. East (bow) The crows got away well together, there being little difference between the boats until quarter of a mile had been traversed, when SlierrifFs crew drew slightly ahead of their opponents, and rowing in lino style, had a lead of half-a-longth at the footbridge. Lee’s crow stuck pluokily to them, but were unable to got on terms. On passing Barton’s jetty, both crews spurted, and a good race to the winningpost resulted in ShcrrifVseeuring a victory by barely a length.
