It is officially stated that DeWet was headed off at Phillipolis, and is now approaching Fauresmith. General Hamilton unearthed a Krupp gun, a pom-pom, and some ammunition at Zandfontein. The New York Tribune’s Brussels correspondent states that a Council of Commandants at Petersburg authorised Botha to capitulate if the Boer prisoners were liberated, rebels pardoned, and semi-independence of Republics under Crown was granted; further, that owners be restored their property. He adds that Kitchener is willing to grant tho terms, but the British insist on unconditional capitulation, and the exile of Kruger and the other Republic authorities. DeWet in any event intends to continue the guerilla war.
