NEW ZEALAND.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. Parliament has further prorogued to 18th April. At the forthcoming meeting of the Wellington Rifle Association, the competitors will be allowed free use of rifle slings, no restriction being placed on them, as was done at the Commonwealth meeting at Sydney. Colonel Somerville is advised that his son, Lieutenant Somerville, who was shot in the left arm, in South Africa, has now recovered, and has rejoined his regiment.

Mr H. M, Lyon, secretary to the Wellington Racing Club, has resigned that position.

The Wellington Friendly Societies’ Council has decided to convene a colonial conference of Friendly Societies, to be held at Wellington six months hence. Edmond Bouvy, formerly cook to the Comte de Courte, French Consul in Wellington, w'ho last year was extradited to New Caledonia under the supposition that he was an escaped convict, has just returned here. He states he arrived 1 ; at Noumea at the end of June, and after undergoing quarantine, was examined by the French authorities and found not to be the Bouvy they wanted. He was accordingly released, and for some time acted as cook to the Governor of New Caledonia. He has come back by' way of Australia, and talks of taking steps in the New Zealand Courts to vindicate his. innocence.

Messrs Nelson Bros, have received the following cable from the Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company : “ There is a further heavy fall in the price of mutton. Quotations are: Best Canterbury, 4Ad; Napier, North Island, 4£d.

The Midland Railway Commission commenced its sittings here to-day, and is taking evidence in reference to the Bel-grove-Motupiko sections. Auckland, last night. . In the Police Court George Graham was charged with aiding to conceal desertion from the Imperial troops. He was evidently unaware that this was a very serious offence. The Magistrate -proposed to impose a nominal fine of a shilling, but counsel pointed out that he must either imprison or discharge. The Magistrate then entered a conviction and discharged the accused.

Dunedin, last night. William Stanton, describing himself as Dr Stanton, was fined 450, the maximum penalty, for issuing the title of doctor, thereby falsely implying that he was recognised in law as a medical practitioner.

The city valuations. for 1901-92 were 4259,622, as against 4245,463 for the previous year’. The Otago Education Board, after fullv answering the defendant’s scale of salaries of teachers, resolved that the same is inequitable, and the Board decline to make . any recommendation. Claiming to be in possession of information not at the command of the department, the Board will be prepared to distribute the money equitably amongst the teachers, or will submit for the Minister’s approval an allocation of money apportioned to the Otago teachers if the Ministers so desire. Tho Dental Board has just concluded its examinations. Eleven candidates presented themselves, six being successful. Those, given alphabetically and not necessarily in order of merit, are : —H. H. Baker, Auckland ; F. R. Devereux, Christchurch ; C. J. P. Haward, Christchurch ; Wm. Purdie, Christchurch; C. P. Stone, Auckland; Wm. Wardrop, Dunedin.
