NEW ZEALAND.

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin,.last nighi

I William Brown Dingle, aged about 34, employed at the pottery works in South Dunedin, dropped dead this morning. He was of good character, .and had been ailing lately, but not seriously. Greymouth, last night. In the District Court, a gold-salting case against Lawson and Pring commenced to-day. The jury panel was nearly exhausted by challenges. The Crown Prosecutor took an hour to open the case. Tansey is now being examined, but so far no new evidence has been given beyond that already reported. Christchurch, last night.

A nautical enquiry was held at Lyttelton yesterday, before Mr R. Beetham, S.M., and Captains McLean and Murray, assessors, touching the recent collision between the steamer Rotomahana and the ketch Kestral, by which the latter was dismasted. . After hearing evidence, the Court gave the decision that Patrick Darrarh, master of the Kestral, was blameable for leaving his vessel in charge of one man, an uncertificated mate, without a look-out. The collision was due to the fact that a bright or flare-light was hot shown on the ketch from, the time the green light of tho steamer was seen ; that j tho second officer of the Rotomahana displayed sound judgment in not porting the helm before he had picked up the ketch, and did his best to avoid a collision, and was in no wise to blame. The costs of the enquiry arc to be paid by Darrarh. All certificates are to be returned.
