Caledonian Sports.

NINTH ANNUAL GATHERING

The ninth annual sports gathering of the Caledonian Society of Poverty Bay took place yesterday, on the Park Company's grounds. The weather was fine, but too warm to be altogether pleasant. There was a large attendance, but it was not. what might have been expected had the day been milder. The appointments

throughout were splendid, and the secretary, aided by an energetic and capable committee, succeeded in carrying everything through in an admirable manner. The sports competitions brought out some really fine contests, some of 'the competitors being men who had in other districts made times that placed them in front rank. The races commenced with

the good time of 17 4-sth for the 150yds maiden, while the quarter was done in the very fast time of 48 l-sth, though hi that case the winner had 41 yards to the good at the start. The hurdles, usually a verp exciting race, was limited to three starters, Atkins winning from scratch. Among those who were present, and greatly assisted in the carrying out of the arrangements were : Messrs G. Spence, E. Cameron, A. F. Kennedy, R. M. Birrcll, John Rosie, R. Robertson, A. Sawyer, J. Nisbett, A. Gregg, A. Grey, G. F. Henderson, A. Townley, J.'M. Cum-, tiling, J. Little, D. A. Ogilvie, J. S. Allan, and D. McKenzie, in addition to the following officials: —Judges—Running : A. AV. Rees, J. C. Nisbett, J. S. Allan, and D. A. Ogilvie. Horse events : E. P. Joyce, C. Clarke, and A. Sawyer. Foot jumping : Messrs A. Gray and J. C. Nisbett. AVrcstling : J. C. Nisbett and J. A. Harding. Hammer and stone : AV. C. Nisbett, Porter, and J. Rosie. Bagpipe music and dancing: R. Robertson, G. Spence, E. Cameron. Handicappcrs: J. C. Nesbitt, G. Primrose, and AV. Fraser. Starter: Mr J. Rosie. Timekeepers : AV. Fraser, • Primrose, and Seymour. The course was marked off by Messrs G. Henderson and Rosie. The results were as follows : Maiden Race, 150,yds. First prize 30s, second prize 10s.—F. Bonham 1, Alex. Curtis 2, F. Thomson 3. Timr 17.4-sths. This was a capital race, but was safely held by Bonham.

Boys’ Handicap (under 16), 200yds. First prize .11, second prize cakes presented by J. Erskine and F. J. Oatridgc, third prize cake presented by J. Craig.— M. Doyle 1, AV. Thehvall 2, J. Roderick 3. There were four other starters, the race being a close one. Caledonian Handicap, 440 yards. First prize £3, and trophy valued at L2 2s, presented by His AVorship the Mayor; second prize trophy valued at LI Is, presented by J. Rosie. Aliclc Morris, 41yds 1 F. H. Somers, 9yds 2 Alex. Curtis, 45yds 3 Also started : Luke AA r ard 20yds, M. F. AVashcr 24yds, A. McKellar 30yds, AV. 11. Harding 41yds, AV. Roderick and A. AV. Kirk 45yds. From a good start Morris soon got into the front, and maintained the lead all the way. Somers came up very fast in the last hundred, but fell away again after passing the second man, Curtis; the others finished up in stragg-

ling order, some giving in as soon as Somers had passed them. Morris won by three yards, the same distance separating second and third men. Time 48 1-5.

Girls’ Handicap (under 12). First prize, trimmed hat, presented by Messrs Adair Bros.; second prize, book, presented by Mr T. Adams.—Myrtle Moore (scr) 1, Maggie Gregg (3yds) 2, A. Hart (7ds) 3. This was a very even race, the girls all finishing close together, but one took a novel method of keeping her opponent back.

Handicap Hurdles, 120,yds, 10 flights of hurdles. First prize, 30s, and Mr IV. Fraser's silver medal; second prize, 10s. H. Atkins, scr 1 D. Coo, syds ... ... 2 B. Siddels, syds... ... 3 The trio started, Atkins having a good win. Tune 20 3-5.

Putting tho Shot. First prize, 10s, and pair boots, valued at .£1 Is, presented by Skelton, Frostick, and Co.; second prize, E. Bobertson’s trophy, value 10s 6d. —D. Daulton, 36ft, 1; Napier, 85ft Sin, 2. Five entries.

Half-mile Handicap. First prize, £3, and Messrs Williams and Kettle’s trophy, value £2 2s; second prize, £1 5s ; third prize, Messrs Primrose and Leslie’s trophy, value 10s 6d. W. Roderick, 65yds ... 1 T. Beatson, 4yds ... 2 W. H. Harding, 60yds... 3 Also started Luke Ward, scr; F. Thompson, 80yds; W. Sharp, Ssyds. Tho limit men made the pace pretty warm from the start, but Boatson and Ward stuck gamely to the stiff task sot them, and when half the distance had been covered they had considerably reduced the gap between themselves and the leaders. After a hard race down the straight, Roderick won by syds from Beatson, who just beat Harding on the post for second honors, the rest half a dozen yards away. Time, 2min. High Jump, for ponies 14.2 and under; prize £2 19s. Preston’s Kate (Morse) ... 1 Newman’s Bell (Newman) ... 2 Hapgood’s Butterfly (Hapgood) ... ... 8 Tarsons’ Tim Whiffler (G. Parsons), Donner’s But, and the same owner's Duck also competed. After the horses had been put over the hurdles several times, the judges decided that Bell and Kate should jump off for first place. These two horses jumped splendidly throughout, and on then- last attempt there was very, little to choose between them, Kate being awarded first and Bell second,

Bicycle Race, 100 yards; last in wins. First prize Sargood and Co.’s trophy, value £2 2s; second prize G. Beere’s trophy, value 10s. Nash 1, W. J. Bar-, low 2. Harding and Hooper, through trying to go too slow, fell. The race was a very amusing one. Nash and Barlow managed to keep on their machines until the tape was reached, Barlow finishing about a foot in front, and the last one being placed first. Throwing the Hammer (standing). First prize £l, second prize A. Sawyer’s trophy, value 10s 6d. T. Snowsell (S4ft lin) 1. There were two other competitors. Caledonian Handicap, 100 yards. First prize £3, second Dr Hughes’ trophy, value £1 Is, The race was in two heats and a final. First Heat. • F. H. Somers, Iyd 1 W. Roderick, 15yds 2 F. E. Benham, 14yds ... 3

McKellar also ran in this heat, all being on the 12 yard" mark. Atkins won by a couple of yards. Time, lOsecs. Final Heat. H. Atkins ... 1 A. Morris ... ... ... 2 F. H. Somers ... ... 3 Roderick was the other starter. From a splendid start all jumped away together, but Atkins proved too good at the distance, and won by a yard, Somers being close up for third place. Time, 9 4-sth secs.

Caledonian Handicap, 220yds. First prize, L 3, and Mr Seymour’s trophy, value 10s 6d; second prize, 10s, and trophy, value 10s 6d, presented by Mr G. AVilliams. F. H. Somers, syds ... 1 H. Atkins, 22yds ... 2 A. Morris, 23yds ... 3 Natawa (18yds), McKellar (23yds), and A. Curtis (26yds) also ran. Mr Rosie sent the field away with a beautiful start, but when half the distance had been covered, Somers had caught most of his field, and coming on full of running won comfortably by three yards, the same distance separating second and third. Time, 21secs.

Wrestling (Cumberland style). First prize, .£2; second, LI. Hall 1, Hagan 2. Two others competed. Dancing (Irish Jig). Pirst prize LI, second 10s. T. M’Kechnie ly A. Campbell 2. \

Handicap Mile Race. First prize, L 5 and Mr Good’s gold medal, 2nd prize LI 10s, 3rd prize trophy value LI Is, presented by Dr Craig. T. Beatson (scr)... ... 1 L. AVard (12yds) ... 2 F. M. AVasher (170yd5)... 3 The scratch man cut his field down in fine style, and after three-quarters of a mile had been covered was within a few yards of the leaders. In the run down the straight Beatson passed the limit men, and running well came on and won comfortably by six yards from AVard, who came with a big rush in the last hundred yards, AVasher being twenty yards away third. Time 4.38 2-5. Dancing and Piping. '

The following dancers and pipers, well known throughout the colony, were present:—Messrs A. Campbell, F. Fergusson, A. AVilkie, J. McKechnio, A. McKay, N. Spence, and D. Campbell. The results were: —

Highland Fling.—McKechnie 1, F. Ferguson 2, A. AVilkie 3 ; 6 entries. Bagpipe Music.—Campbell 1, McKechnie 2.

Sheuntreus.—McKechnie 1, Fergusson 2, AVilkie 3 ; 4 entries. Sword Dance.—McKechnie 1, Fergusson 2, AVilkie 3; 4 entries. Mr D. Campbell takes Mr J. Ferguson’s special prize of L2 2s for the most points in bagpipe music. Mr McKechnie takes Mr T. Steele’s prize of L2 2s and also Mr J. Robb’s special prize of one dozen cabinet photos for the most points in Scotch dancing events.
