The demonstration at Napier yesterday caused an awkward block on the telegraph wires, and messages that should have come through early in the evening had not reached us by daylight this morning. Sporting intelligence that was eagerly sought last night shared the fate of much other interesting telegraphic matter that would in the ordinary course have appeared in this morning’s Times. Several letters are held over till tomorrow’s issue. The Gisborne portion of the ’Frisco mail should come to hand by the Omapere this morning. The total exemptions from vaccination made in Gisborne is 344, there being 138 exemptions on Wednesday, the last day on which they could be made. The Patutahi school picnic takes place to-day, in the Patutahi Domain. The committee extend a cordial invitation to the general public. The starting at the athletic sports yesterday was exceedingly fine. The outside competitors say that they have not seen anything to equal it in their travels. The starter was Mr Jphn Rosie, and in every event he was successful iii getting the competitors away evenly. . The forthcoming borough election under the new Act promises to be the most' interesting municipal Jcontest ever held in Gisborne. All the Councillors and 'the Mayor retire at the same time, and already mention is made of over twenty candidates who are likely to enter the gold. The wore the merrier,
