EXCITING OCEAN RACE.

FEOM AUCKLAND TO SYDNEY.

OILING THE COAL. BED FUNNEL BOAT TO TACKLE .AMEBICAN 'FBISCO LINED. [OIHUGIINE TIMES SPECIAL.] Auckland, last night. Tho Union Company's s.s. Mararoa and the B.M.S. Sonoma sailed for Sydney at midnight. Much excitement prevailed in town during the day as to a race to oventuatc botwein these two rival steamers from this port to' Sydney. The Muraroa’s departure from Auckland was delayed until to-night, in order that 'lieu machinery might undergo all tho necessary cleaning.

Her coal has been saturated with kerosene, and tiie Union Company has neglected nothing that will give tho Mararoa a fair ehancoof attaining the highest possible spood on this occasion. The general impression here is that tho race will provoMi vory even one, but some people arc inclined to believe that the Mararoa will reach Sydney before the American rival of which so much has boon heard. Very keen interest is being taken in the rnco, and there is no doubt that equal interest will bo manifested on tho Australian side. The betting is slightly in favor of the Union Company’s fine steamship, which is so well and favorably known to tho pcoplo of Gisborne. However, the Sonoma, which was also well propared for tho race, has many fanciors.
