Harbor Board Election.

Gp.eat interest was taken in the elections yesterday for- the vacant seats on the Harbor Board.

TOWN SEATS. There wore six candidates for tho two town seats, and it was generally agreed to be a very difficult matter to place the candidates beforehand. The general public began to assemble outside the polling booth till half-past-six, the crowd increasing as the evening went on. At 7 o clock Mr Quigley, the returning officer, .stated that the results were so close that it was necessary to make a recount. The recount was duly mado, and then it was found necessary to make a third one, so as to make matters more sure. Messrs McKay and Gumming acted as poll clerks, and Messrs D. Murray and T. Cotter as scrutineers. At 9 o’clock the result was given out as follows: — Gisborne. Fettio ... 182 Whinray ... 181 Joyco ... ••• ••• 181 • Tucker 128 Harris 120 Matthews 91 Informal ... ••• ••• 15

The Beturning Officer said that as Messrs Whinray and Joyce had polled a similar number of votes it was for him to give a casting vote, and he gave it in favor of Mr Whinray. The crowd quietly dispersed, and thorc was no speechifying.

THE COUNTRY. Throughout tho district keen interest was evinced in tho election of two members for the country, and polling at the various booths was fairly heavy. The returns commenced to come in early in the evening, and at nine o’clock all but three—Motu, Waipiro, and Tiniroto—had reached the Returning Officer. The voting was very close, Messrs Cooper and Hepburn heading tho poll, thero being only five votes between thorn, whilst Messrs Dewing and Shelton were well up. The throe places mentioned as having to come in are not likely to affect, tho return of Mossrs Cooper and Hepburn. Gisborne.
