CYCLING.
A non-stop motor car run of six hundred and twenty one miles was recently held on the Crystal Palace Track, London, by an eight horse power French motor car. The above distance was covered in the smart time of twenty-four hours fifty-four minutes seventeen seconds—an average of close upon twenty-five miles an hour. By cable we learn that American Lawson, (who recently arrived in Australia), won the Australian Mile Championship, at the Sydney Commonwealth Meeting. . The Daily Express (London), is responsible for the following excerpt: “ We are now in the early days of a tremendous revolution in the traffic of our city streets, and country roads. The public in this century will be grateful to the men who are spending time, and money, and work, popularising the autocar. It is the vehicle of the future; it will go far to eliminate the horse as an element in road traffic.” The article concludes with the truism: “In ton years’ time we shall be wondering why we ridiculed the autocar, and thanking its advocates, for the improved condition of local travel which we shall enjoy.” The machines that were recently taken out to South Africa by the Inns of Court Volunteers, proved of valuable service, were all fitted with tropical tyres.
