Sydney Smith, of New Plymouth, who has been appointed a sergeant in the Siath Contingent, is a son of Mr E. M. Smith, M.H/R. The Union Company and the Huddart, Parker Company are protesting against the proposal now before the Napier Harbour Board, to make an increase. in the charge upon vessels going alongside the Glasgow wharf at Napier/ The companies consider the present charge high enough, and that a higher charge would not be in the interests of the port.
