ROWING.
[Bt Stroke.] Bowixg is again taking its place in Poverty Bay as one of the leading outdoor sports, but to my mind parents are not fully aware of the benefits (conferred on growing youths by the pastime. Bowing strengthens the lungs and most of the muscles of the body in a surprising manner, and has also this advantage—young men aspiring to aquatic honors are compelled to cultivate temperance to enable them-to reach the top rung of the ladder. However, it seems that an unusually large interest has been taken in rowing this season, both clubs heving enrolled more than the usual number of new members, and in the races tha Of have been completed there ha
been a keen desire on the parfof most of the Competing crews to win the various trophies. More particularly was suoh the case in the last round of trial fours in the Poverty Bay shed, when nine crews competed, and there was hardly more than a length difference in any of the several heats. The same club have now got eighteen pairs of oarsmen training assiduously for the double sculls in the two new boats received this season from Norton, and the committee have so arranged the crews that although the race will be handicapped the limit will be a small one, and being the first races of the kind in the shed it must cause a certain amount of interest. The Gisborne Club has also a trial fours coming off for trophies kindly presented by Mr A. F. Kennedy. They are also calling a general meeting for the purpose ot appointing the selection committee in connection with the Hawke’s Bay Easter fixtures, j and will have an Auckland crew visiting if ments can be made.
Following are the handicaps for the Poverty Bay Bowing Club’s double sculls competition, the first three heats of which will be rowed this evening:—J. Webb and J. Parker - scr, A. Pritchard, and E. Jones scr., B. Moore and C. Taylor 2sec, J. Poole and H. Taylor 2sec, F. Fox and J. Glennie 4sec, D. West and J. Newton Gaec, A. W. Kirk and W. Boderick Csec, A. Bussell and It. Kellett Bseo, E. File and H. Solvander Bsec, Arch. Kirk and J. Muir Bsec, H. Burns and Smith lOsec, J. Harneld and G. Brown 12sec. The heats to be rowed this evening will between A. Pritchard (ser) and E. File (Bsee), R. Moore (2see) and J. Poole (2sec), D. West (6see) and H. Burns (lOsec). On Tuesday evening F. Fox (4sec) meets Arch. Kirk (8seo), A. W. Kirk (6sec) meets A. Bussell (Bsecs), and J. Webb (ser) rows J. Harneld (12sec). The races should produce some very close finishes, as the crews are "all in good fettle. The following crews have been picked by the Gisborne Bowing Club for the President’s fours :—Lee, Holmes, Pirie, and East; Colebourne, Dodd, Craig, and Sargisson; L. Sberriff, Freer, Hansen, and Pettie; Boyds, Buscke, Bright, and Bushnell; Barclay, Davidson, B. Thompson, and Drummond; A. Sherriff, Far am, Graham, and K. Thompson. In order to give the crews time to get fit, the races will not be rowed off for a month.
