At the Police Court yesterday, in the case of Robert Mawhinnoy, who was charged with having committed an act of indecency in Gladstone Road, evidence with regard to accused’s previous character was heard. Accused was convicted of the charge, and ordered to find one surety of £SO and himself in a similar amount to come up for sentence when called upon. Albert Higgs pleaded guilty to having attempted to commit suicide on the 31st ult., and the case was adjourned to enable the accuser to find one surety of £SO for his goodbehaf or in the future. Cecil William Rhodes, for bscene language, was sentenced to 48 hours imprisonment. It would lookgas tln< lgh the Premier or the Defence Department vas displeased at the action of Lieut. Hughes, who was in charge of the New Zealan.. contingent by the Harlech Castle from Capetown to Melbourne and Sydney. Hughes, who comes from Napier, did splendid work throughout the campaign, and after being promoted to a lieutenancy, took part in the gallant chargo of our boys at New Zealand Hill, for which he tvas mentioned in despatches. After bringing his men to Sydney we now regret to notice that Captain Hayhurst, who was invalided home early in the campaign, has been placed in charge of the New Zealanders at Sydney. GTSBOKNE HARBOR BOARD. TO THE COUNTY ELECTORS OF THE GISBORNE.HARBOR BOARD. Ladies and Gentlemen, There being a general election for members of the Board to be taken next month, I beg respectfully to offer my services. At present the. Board have arranged for a large quantity of work, including the extension of the groyne and the building and using of an expensive dredge. The groyne and the dredge will cost about £22,000, and in addition to this the svorking expenses of the dredge have to'be provided for. This work has been submitted to Mr Napier Bell for his approval, and his report recommends the work being carried out. As a layman, if elected to the Board I shall do my best to see the present authorised work carried out with expedition and economy. From a perusal of the statement of accounts published to the end of 1890, and a glance to-day of what the figures will be in the Board’s statement to 31st, December, 1900,1 am strongly of opinion that without any alteration to the existing wharfage tariff, with which the district appears to be satisfied, the revenue of the Board in the very near future should with proper economy be such that no harbor rales should be collectable, and that later the wharfage Tates should be reduced as the volume of the trade of the port increases. If elected, I will do my best to see—(l.) That the shipping interest gets as good facilities as it is entitled to in such a port as Gisborne. (2.) That the accommodation for passengers coming and going shall receive fair attention at the hands of the Board. (3.) That the large expenditure to which the Board is at present committed is carried out with the best economy and with due consideration to the best results. (4.) That the finance of the Board should be worked with a view of — (a) Abolishing the existing harbor rates, (i) Reducing the existing wharfage rate. With this expression of my views, I respectfully ask your consideration of my candidature. I am, Your obedient servant, F. J. SHELTON. MONEY TO LEND.
