The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE JANUARY 5, 1901. A NEW INDUSTRY.

A new line of industry is being opened up for this district, and it is with feelings of pleasure we record the fact that by the bteamer Delphic yesterday Messrs Common, Shelton, and Co. made the first shipment of pork from this district. Mr Shelton- informs us' that he is firmly of the opinion thatpork can be profitably grown in this district. The flat lands and the climate are admirably suited for the growing of maize and pumpkins, which, although not the best food for pigs, is about the cheapest. The pork industry has had a very marked effect in the building up of the great city of Chicago, which is the pork centre of the United States, and Mr Shelton says that what can be done there with about 2000 miles of railage to the port of shipment can be done in the Gisborne district. The matter is well worth the consideration of the settlers here, and as Mr Shelton states in our advertising columns that he will be a purchaser of pigs in any quantity during the season commencing in May of this year, we hope to see this industry given a fair trial. As a rule Mr Seddon does not propose anything which is not practical, and we wish him success with this new industry, which will aid materially in the development of the district.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Is it always wise to be moderate in one’s demands to the powers that be ? The Government have forwarded to the Cook County Council a sum of £2OO for the completion of a further section of the Hang&roa-Tiniroto road. The County Council asked for £2OOO ; the Chamber of Commerce, with Mr T. Adair acting as spokesman, took the. matter up in a-minor key in regard to the question of cost. His appeal was' effectual in so far that a small sum was granted, and the Council’s appeal was ineffectual to the extent of the difference in amount. The question now is, should Mr Adair have asked for 1 more, or the Council for less ? One thing is certain, that the £2OO, though a welcome grant, will not go far towards completing the work in hand. It is estimated that when the money is spent there will still be four miles to complete. The Countv Council has also received a sum of £3OO for metalling the W&iroa road, so that that much-troubled body has still a ray of sunshine to light up the treasury. The Council should not spurn these little gifts, but rather show to the Government that they are so highly appreciated that more would be welcome.
