BIG WIN FOR VICTORIA; By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, Jan. 3. South Australia’s second innings closed for 177, Wakeley 20 being the highest score. Victoria won by 238 runs. GISBORNE V. HAWKE’S BAY. A GOOD GAME. [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION;] Napier, last night. Gisborne’s innings olosed about three o’clock. Although their total was so large it did not disconcert the home batsmen, who seemed to appreciate the fine scoring. The wicket suited them equally as well as their opponents, and rattling on the runs faster succeeded in topping the visitors’ score before li p.m., and when the stumps were drawn for the day the board showed 248 for nine wickets. The ninth wieket fell with the home team still 8 to the bad, but Burke, the last man, was equal to the emergency and held up his end well, also enabling Lusk to attain his century. The veteran’s display throughout was an excellent one, not marred by a possible chance, and he punished the bowling pretty severely all round the wicket. B. Cotterill ako showed very fine batting form for his 42, playing his hits with excellent judgment. Gore (26), and D. Canning (26) also gave bowlers a good deal of trouble. Hussey .. .. 11 Ilindmarsh, b Hussey .. .. 1 Hughes, b Gibson 8 Burke, not out .. .. .. 7 Extras .. .. .. .. 13 Total for 9 wickets .. .. 248 [Own Correspondent.] Gisborne’s lirst innings against the Hawke’s Bay combined team produced two hundred and fifteen runs. Ludbrook played splendidly for 73, Hussey 33, Vincent 31, Harris 26, McAldie 12. Lusk was the principal bowler for Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay made two hundred and forty for nine wickets, Lusk one hundred and six (not out), Cotterill 42. Hussey and Gibson were the principal bowlers for Gisborne. The match was very evenly contested, and will result in a good finish. Tho wicket was perfect, and too good for the bowlers.
