“ Rule Britannia,” and indicated that our Empire would yet lead the world, and that wars would be things o£ the p..st. He wished them all “A Happy New Year,” and many of them. During the evening Mr A. M. DeCosta, of Wellington, sang “ I Trust You Still ” ; Master Ralph Warren (attired in khaki) sang “ The Union Jack of Old England ” and “Lads in Navy Blue,” with chorus ; Mr H. DeCosta sang “My Birthday ” ; and Mr Cogarsang “The Midshipmite.” Following this portion of the programme the Whataupoko Band gave a concert from Mr Steele s Albion Club Hotel balcony, and subsequently both bands further enlivened the great concourse with music. The Gas Company had generously contributed its sharo to the illuminations, and notwithstanding the gale of wind during the day Messrs Spence, Lunn, and Arundel fixed'up on the Turangatiui bridge a device which brilliantly showed out the figures 1901 in gaslight. The procession of boats had a very pretty effect, and was highly creditable to the Mayor and Messrs Nield, Morrison, and McLaohlan, who put the idea into _ effect. A grand display of fireworks, continuing for over an hour, was made, Mr Huddlestone being entitled to the thanks of the commu s nity for the pains he had taken in the matter. The secretary for the gathering was Mr C. F. Lewis, and Mr W. Webb as usual gave very great assistance.
