CONGRESS VOTES EXTRA FUNDS TO HELP ARM ALLIES
WASHINGTON. Sept. 22.
Congress completed action today on a 17,000,000,000-dollar emergency deficiency appropriations bill after rejecting a rigid ban on Marshall Plan aid of European countries which ship potential war material to Russia or her satellites. The bill, as sent to President Truman for signature, leaves to the National Security Council the decision whether United States aid should be withheld from countries supplying such war potential. The bill was the first step in advancing new funds for the Korean war.
It also provides 4,000,000,000 dollars to help to rearm free nations abroad. The bill also provides 11,000,000 dollars for the armed services, 200,000,000 dollars for research on atomic weapons, including the hydrogen bomb, and 79,000,000 dollars for increasing the ‘‘Voice of America” broadcasts.
