A.C.T.U. OPPOSING CONSCRIPTION FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE
MELBOURNE. Sept. 22.
The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Mr. A. E. Monk, states that the trade union movement will strongly oppose an amendment of the Defence Act permitting conscription for overseas service. He says that the broadcast by Mr. Menzies on Wednesday night contained two significant observations: “Those who argue about military service overseas as if it were anathema to some popular instinct are living in a dead world,” and “Australia must be prepared to meet an enemy’s attack where it comes —not on the battlefield which Australia prefers”. Mr. Monk says that conscription for overseas and compulsory training for home defence were two separate issues. The trade union movement would not be prepared to see Australian workers embroiled in any or every issue or dogfight that occurred in any area of the world.
