MOTORISTS WANT CHANGE IN LAW ON NEGLIGENCE
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 22. Amendments to the law in New Zealand so that a greater distinction can bo made between minor and gross negligence in charges of negligent driving causing injury or death were pressed for in a motion carried by delegates representing 52,000 motorists at the annual meeting o[ the Soutli Island Motor Union today. The motion read: "That representations be made to the Minister of Transport drawing his attention to the recently-reported remarks of Mr. Justice Callan in the Supreme Court at Auckland in regard to the desirability of having due allowance made between minor and gross negligence in charges of driving causing injury or death and (hat, while strongly depreciating careless driving and supporting to the full proper prevention of the truly blameworthy driver, the union asked that the law be altered as had been done in England so that something describable as gross negligence was necessary before there could be criminal liability.
