WELLINGTON PORT CHARGES INCREASED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. Substantial increases in harbour charges were adopted last night by the Wellington Harbour Board. The new rates will take effect from October 1. The charges a ton, with old rates in parentheses, are:— Inward Wharfage.—General goods, Gs 2d (4s); awkward and fragile packages requiring extra labour, 9s 8d (Gs 3d). Outward Wharfage.—General goods, 3s Id (2s). Transhipment.—General goods, 7s (4s Gd); awkward goods and iragile packages, 10s lOd (7s). Storage.—General goods after two free nights. 8d (Gd). Ship Dues. —Port charges, 4.25 d (3.9 d); mooring or removal fees. Id (.975d): berthage rates, ,7d (.sd); harbour improvement rale, Is 5d (1s).
During the year 1949-50 the Post Office handled 27,054,336 long-distance telephone calls, an increase of over 2,000,000 on the previous year.
