MORE DUTCH IMMIGRANTS. Thirty more Dutch immigrants arrived at Auckland yesterday by flyingboat from Sydney. The arrivals are part of a draft of 69. Eleven arrived on Wednesday, and 23 more are due today, including a family with six children. SAILING ON OCTOBER ".—The Minister of Defence. Mr. T. L. Macdonald, announced in Wellington yesterday that the frigate Rotoiti (Lieut.-Com-mander B. E. Turned. R.N.Z.N.) would sail from Auckland on October 7 on her passage north to relieve the frigate Pukaki (Lieut.-Commander L. E. Herrick. D.S.C., R.N.) at present serving with the United Nations naval forces in Korea. The officer complement of H.MN.Z.S. Rotoiti had been completed with the appointment of Lieutenant (E) T. L. Taylor. R.NZ.N.. as engineer officer, who will also carry out the duties of divisional engineer officer for the New Zealand frigates serving in the Far East. PROBATION FOR BIGAMIST.—Robert Allan Hodder, aged 53, ioreman stevedore, was admitted to two years’ probation by Mr. Justice Gallon in Auckland yesterday for bigamy. His Honour said a tine would have been a more suitable penalty had Hodder been able to pay. Hodder was ordered to pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution. Defence counsel said Hodder married an English woman, and they lived together only four days. He came to New Zealand, but she did not join him. It appeared that Hodder's wife committed bigamy, when she married him, but this could not be proved. KNEE CONTROL FOR ARTIFICIAL LEGS. — A knee control for artificial legs, invented bv Mr. Charles Lan dor, Karori. Wellington, is being put into general use by the Disabled S e r v i c c m e n’s Re-establishment League’s training centre in Wellington. The new control, which elitnin ates straps, is stated to give a man a more natural walking movement and has an automatic breaking action on (lie knee which prevents it getting out of control. The research department of the British Ministry of Pensions is trying out the new control. and 'he Australian Repatriation Commission has asked Mr Lander to supply it with a sample knee joint DEFECTIVE BICYCLES.—“From an examination of the returns of the recent Dominion-wide cycle check it would seem that a large number of cyclists prefer to place their faith in their guardian angel rather than attend tc the basic safety requirements for their bicycles." said the Minister of Transport, Mr W. S Goosmnn, in Wellington yesterday. He added that more than 7000 defects were found in 13.500 bicycles examined ijy officers of the Transport Department during the August check The Minister appealed to parents to ensure that the bicycles of their children complied with the basic safety requirements.
