Gisborne’s First Call For Labour Since September 12
Settlement of the national waterside strike was signalised today so far as Gisborne was concerned by the com-1 mencement of a small job which had been held over since last week. Only eight men—representing slightly more than 10 per cent, of the Gisborne waterside union membership were called for this job. which comprised the discharge of 100 tons of coal from the tug Kaiwaka. The Kaiwaka arrived at Gisborne from Auckland early last week, and would have put her coal ashore last Friday but for a downpour which washed out the prospects of work on the waterfront. No cal! was made on Friday. and by Monday the union had notified that in compliance with instructions from its national headquarters, no calls would be answered pending the settlement of the national dispute. Coastal Shipping Movements Today's call was, in tact, the first put out by the Waterfront Industry Commission’s office at the Gisborne wharves since September 12. Snipping movements in the port during the past 10 days have been limited to the comings and goings of small coastal ships transporting meat from Tokomaru Bay to Napier for transhipment there to an overseas liner. These small vessels have required r.o waterfront labour while in Gisborne.
More norma! conditions will develop tomorrow, when the Koau will call at Gisborne for a load of meat for Napier. On Monday, the Margaret W. will arrive from Auckland, -where she was caught part-loaded by the general stoppage. Movements of other vessels which normally visit Gisborne are a little uncertain. as the hold-up since Monday lost Jins product ;i decider! chance in the supply of loods and industrial 'materials to some major centres,'and there may be diversions of tonnage for a time.
