Union Withdrew Prior To Expulsion, Says Dominion President
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 5. When news reached Wellingtin yesterday that the International Transport Workers’ Federation had in July expelled the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union from membership, the union countered with the statement that it withdrew its affiliation by a decision reached last May. The New Zealand Seamen’s Union announced it had been advised by the I.T.W.F. that a congress of the federation at Stuttgart in July expelled the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union because it affiliated with the Communist-dominated World Federation of Trade Unions.
The president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union, Mr. H. Barnes, greeted this announcement as humorous. “We had left that school and transferred to another three months before they oxocllcd us." he said. Ilis national executive in March decided to join the maritime section of the W.F.T.U. and leave the I.T.W.F. The union's files showed that in May the union informed the I.T.W.F. of this.
