WAITUHI WIN MEN’S SENIOR A HOCKEY FINAL

(By Umpire.)

The competitions of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association were brought to a succesful conclusion on Saturday at the 'Childers Road Reserve. Bright games I were seen by a large gallery, while the 'grounds were in excellent condition. I Results: —

| Men’s Senior A. —Waituhi (A) 2 v. ■Caledonia 1: H. 5.0.8. (A) 1 v. High School (A) 1: Pirates w.o. Tamanuhm. Women’s SeniorfA. —Hinenui 0 v. Kia iToa 0: Y.M.P. (A) 4 v. Waituhi 1; Turanganui 6 v. Waikanae 0. Men’s Senior B. —H. 5.0.8. (B) 3 v. Wesley 2; Watuhi (B) 3 v. High School (B) 2- High School (C) 7 v. Caledonia '(B) 3. Women’s Senior B.—Mangatu 3 v. Nurses 1: Shamrock 6 v. Manaki 0. MEN’S SENIOR A Waituhi’s 2-1 victory over Caledonia won them the championship. Previoulsy these teams were level. The game was played at a fast pace throughout. Waituhi were the first to goal, T. Smiler after a fine solo effort flicking a high shot into the corner of the net. After many penalty corners, which proved negative, A. Taylor (Caledonia) swept into the circle, drove hard, but the ball hit a post and rebounded into the field of play. Waituhi defended for a period, and when it seemed that they would clear, G. Slade, centre forward for Caledonia, trapped the hit on the circle line and scored an excellent goal. Play was confined to the Coledonia area, where G. Knighton and D. Lewis were responsible for some excellent clearing hits. For Waituhi, G. Tupera from a penalty corner scored with a hard shot. Caledonia made desperate efforts to equalise, but the final whistle found them on attack *nd still one goal down. H. 5.0.8. (A) with a scratch team, were able to hold High School to a one-all draw. H. 5.0.8. were first to score when Morrow with a good run down the right sent in a shot that Forbes could not stop. Coker in goal was then called on to save a hot shot from H. Underdown. Several penalty corners were conceded by High School, but H. 5.0.8. were unable to goal. School then took play to the opposing goal where Uuderdown finished off with a good goal. MEN’S SENIOR B H. 5.0.8. (B), winners of the grade, were tested in their match with Wesley and just won 3-2. Wesley fought hard all the way, but just lacked the necessary finish. Waituhi (B) turned the tables on High School (B), who in previous encounters proved superior to the Maori side. Waituhi carried play to the schoolboys and gave the defence little respite. High School (C) had an easy win over Caledonia (B) by seven goals to three. Though Caledonia were short, School thoroughly deserved their win. The experience they have gained should be of much value to them in the future. WOMEN’S SENIOR A Kia Toa nearly sprung a surprise against Hinenui, the sides playing a scoreless draw. The Hinenui forward line showed no dash at all, and never appeared to settle down, Kia Toa missed several attempts to goal. M. Hickman showed great dash for Kia Toa, but for once her shooting was erratic, while Hinenui’s scoring forward, N. Keefe, was also off her game, Y.M.P. carried too many guns for Waituhi. M. Nepe and G. Pohatu played at the top of their form for Y.M.P. The Y.M.P. forwards were quick to seize on the mistakes of the Waituhi defence and with fast following through G. Pohatu and R. Farmer were able to score two goals each. The scorer for Waituhi was J. Ferries.

Waikanae took the field with only six players again Turanganui, but could not withstand the onslaughts of Turanganui who ran out winners by five goals to nil. The scorers for Turanganui were R. Harvey (2), J. Cotter (2), and S. Rikirangi (1). WOMEN’S SENIOR B

In an even contfest Mangatu defeated Nurses 3-1. As a result of their win Mangatu share the championship with Y.M.P. (B). It was Mangatu’s first season in the competition. Shamrock defeated Mahaki 6-2. The newcomers to Shamrock have gradually improved and should be an asset to their club next season. Scorers for Shamrock were M. Foote (3), N. Dickinson (2), and L. Walker (1). For Mahaki J. Atkinson scored two goals.
