Rearmament Drive By West Urgent In Weeks Ahead
(2 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 3. The deputies of the North Atlantic Treaty nations agreed during their London meetings on a short-term programme for the immediate production of urgently-needed defence equipment, says the Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent. They adjourned late yesterday until September 13. Each deputy is taking to his Government a strong recommendation for action in this “high priority’’ plan to be followed by a "mediumterm” programme. Their main anxiety is to ensure that an instant start is made to overtake the more serious deficiencies in arms and military man-power. The American chairman. Mr. C. Spofford, will convey this sense of urgency to President Truman. He will tell him that, failing drastic steps in weeks rather than months, the whole policy of containing Kremlin pressure in Europe will have to be reconsidered.
