Atlantic Powers Plan Speed-Up Of Arms Output

(11 a.m.) LONDON. Aug. 22. The deputies of the North Atlantic Treaty Nations, at a council meeting in London, today resumed work on plans to "accelerate the strengthening of the overall defences of the North Atlantic area.” an official communique stated tonight.

Among the measures considered were steps to increase the effective military forces, the production of equipment, especially items of high priority, and financial means for these purposes. It is understood that the most important point raised at today’s meeting was the possibility of compensation for those countries whose balance of trade with the United States is adversely affected by turning over factories from the production of dollar exports to armaments production in accordance with the requirements of the new overall defence programme. The deputies also discussed the appointment of a permanent secretarygeneral for the organisation. The deputies will continue their meetings until early September and adjourn in time for meetings of the North Atlantic Council in New York in mid-September.
