War May Be Over By February

(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 22. The Secretary of Defence. Mr. Louis Johnson, estimates the Korean war will end by about February if there is no change in plans to push the Communists back only to their pre-war border. This top-level estimate came to light today with the release of testimony given by military leaders last month before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on behalf of President Truman's request for a supplementary defence appropriation.

Answering a question. Mr. Johnson said: "The Korean situation, I hope, is a six or eight months' proposition.” Other testimony indicated that the Korean fighting and resulting emphasis on bolstering the defences will give the United States a strength of 17 armydivisions, an air force of 69 groups and a fleet, including 23 carriers. Mr. Johnson indicated that the decision two years ago to withdraw American occupation forces from Korea and write it off as a military base was made at levels above the military.
