CONCERN FOR ESCAPEES MAROONED ON ISLET
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL Aug. 22. Concern for the safety or the two youths, who escaped from the Invercargill Borstal Institution and finally sought refuge on an islet off the coast of Stewart Island is being shown by the police. Mason's Island, where the youths have been marooned since Sunday, has been lashed by storm and there is little shelter and practically no source of food on it. The youths might be suffering seriously from exposure. The launch Helga, carrying police and warders, left Bluff today. If conditions permitted the party intended to land on the island in the attempt to recapture the escapees.
Permission to hold a children’s procession in Gisborne on Friday, commencing at 3 p.m., was granted to the secretary-organiser of the United Nations appeal for children by the Gisborne Borough Council last night.
