DEPUTATION TO SENATE ON LAW EXAM FOR SERVICEMEN

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. A deputation from the Wellington Law Society is today waiting on the Senate of the University of New Zealand to appeal against the decisions of the senate executive committee on war concessions in law to ex-servicemen. The decision to receive the deputation was made at today's senate meeting after a report on war concessions had been received from its. executive committee. This report stated that the recommendation of the council of legal education that in the law professional examination Latin should not be a compulsory unit for ex-servicemen, who had to pass in two units only to complete the professional examination, had been considered. The report added that the war concession's committee had been advised to continue its existing policy and not to grant those concessions. The adoption of the report was deferred until after the deputation had been heard by the senate. The executive committee also reported concerning the March examinations in law and accountancy, stating that the question of continuing them had been carefully considered, but it was decided that those of March, 1950, would be the last special examinations for ex-servicemen. The senate adopted this report after the vice-chancellor, Professor L. A. Gordon, had stated that the professional organisations concerned had not protested against the decision.
