CARPET-MAKING CRUTCHINGS SELL WELL IN SOUTH
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 2. At the Wellington crutching sale yesterday a total of 7280 bales was submitted, states the official report of the Wellington Woolbrokers’ Association. In addition there was a small proportion of early-shorn fleece and held-over fleece and oddments.
The crutchings were in good condition with a tendency to be mixed in length or on the short side. Compared with last year’s crutchings, however, they were slightly stronger and lighter in condition. The feature was the unsatisfied American demand for all classes of carpet crutchings.
Very fine crossbred crutchings. particularly hogget types, met with limited competition and sold well below the levels established for coarser sorts. Crutchings containing seed were very erratic. Oddments sold most satisfactorily.
Competition was keen and well spread. America lifted the largest weight with English and Australian carpet mills adding support and the Continent obtained the bulk of the oddments. Compared with recent sales all sorts were fully firm. First Crutchings, fine 46/50's. —Good, 46£d to 50d: average. 42d to 46d: inferior and seedy. 34d to 40d. Medium. 44/48's.—Super, 58d to G2d; good, 45d to 57-Jd; average, 48d to 53Jd; inferior and seedy, 35d to 46d. Coarse, 40/46’s. —Super, 62d to 65d: good, 58d to 61d; average, 51d to 56Ad. Lamb Crutchings.—Average to good, 39d to 44d: inferior and seedy, 34d to 38d. Second CrutChnigs.-—Good, 47d to 50d; average, 40d to 44d; inferior, 35d to 39d.
