INCREASED STAKE MONEY

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The Wellington Cup, to be run at Trentham in January next, will carry a stake of £7OOO, plus a gold cup valued at I2ogns., for the owner of the winner, and a gold nugget tie-pin for the rider of the winner. This year’s Cup stake was £OOOO, in addition to a 120gns. cup. The gold cup for the 1951 race will be given by Mr. P. Coyle, a steward of the Wellington Racing Club, and the tie-pin will be given by Mr. D. R. Dowell, Greymouth. The stake for the Thompson Handicap (run at the autumn meeting), will be £3OOO next year, compared with £2500 for this year's event. The total stakes for the club's four meetings in the new season will be £36,550, an increase of £ISOO on the total last season. These decisions were made at a meeting of the Wellington Racing Club when the programmes for the new season were framed.
