V2 FIRED 48 MILES OVER ATLANTIC

NEW YORK, July 25.

The United States Air Force “christened” its new long-range proving ground at Coca, Florida, today, by successfully firing a giant guided missile on a horizontal flight over the Atlantic Ocean.

The rocket climbed to 50,000 ft. and then levelled off for the horizontal flight into the area, which had been ■cleared of shipping. Radio beams guided the rocket while radar traced its course and other instruments recorded data of its flight. A German V2 type rocket started the flight, and as it lost speed it released a smaller "W.A.C. Corporal" rocket, developed in the United States. The V2 travelled 48 miles over the Atlantic before it threw out the smaller rocket, and was exploded at 20.000 ft. by remote control. The W.A.C. Corporal” was allowed to travel another 15 miles.

The top speed of the V2 was estimated at 3600 miles an hour. The V2 and the “W.A.C. Corporal'' were assembled to make the missile 56ft. long, with a total weight of 14 tons. The “W.A.C. Corporal” was fitted into the head of the V2.
