R.S.A. AWAITS NEWS ABOUT SUBSIDY: MEMORIAL BUILDING

Whether a subsidy will be available for the construction of the R.S.A. war memorial building in Gisborne will be known in September, and the annual meeting of the Gisborne R.S.A. last nieht was given good reason to expect additional funds from that source. Colonel R. F. Gambrill. a member of the board of trustees, told the meeting ,of recent developments. The Minister 'of Infernal Affairs. Mr. W. A. Bodkin, had 'given the deputation a very fair hearing and there was little doubt but that a subsidy would be available. It was possible that a slight alteration would have to be made regarding the t't'e to the land, but Colonel Gambrill did not consider any difficulty in that connection. Application Lodged An application had been lodged for the subsidy and it would be necessary now to await the decision. An assurance had been given that the building could proceed as soon as the result of the application was known. It was learned from Mr. G. M. Beaumont that permits were being granted for commercial bui'dings, the cost being the on’v barrier Steel was available, "nd there was onlv the transport difficulty governing supplies of cement. .Timber could be secured in other parts of New Zealand There should be no de'av occasioned by the Government budding controller. Colonel Gambrill said there was £ls-090 in the building fund' and the 'ubsidv would make available a furth-”- £9OOO. giving a total of £24,000. The president. Mr. M. R. Maude, explained to the meeting that materials bought for_ tv>e construction of a temnorarv building were being disposed of in view of the orobabalitv of being able to construct *he permanent building at an earlv date.
