LIFE MEMBERSHIP FOR RETIRING DIGGER PRESIDENT

WHILE returning thanks to members for the confidence placed in him as the incoming president of the Gisborne R.S.A., Mr. M. R. Maude, at the annual meeting of members in the Bon Accord rooms last evening, paid a high tribute to the retiring president, Mr. G. C. Jones.

Mr. Maude's reference to Mr. Jones’ association with the Gisborne R.S.A. traversed his 25 years as an executive member and president. He had been one of the members instrumental in resuscitating the R.S.A. here in 1925. Since that date Mr. Jones had made himself thoroughly conversant with the R.S.A. activities and had been of particular assistance in guiding the hand of the branch in relation to land settlement matters, of which he had deep knowledge and convictions. Honour Already Conferred

His value as an executive member had been such, indeed, that he had had conferred upon him by the association the gold star in recognition of that work. That was not lightly given, said Mr. Maude. ITe announced that the executive had decided to confer life membership on Mr. Jones in further recognition of his work for the branch in Gisborne.

The sentiments expressed by the president were endorsed by Messrs. A. H. Berwick. J. Leggat and K. F. Jones. Mr. Jones was then presented with the certificate of life membership by Mr. Maude, aiid was accorded musical honours.

Returning thanks. Mr. Jones said it had been a great pleasure to work for the R.S.A No work was more worthwhile in his opinion. It was an organisation in which men did not work for their own benefit, but rather "for the bloke who needs assistance, and if a person cannot get satisfaction out of that there is something wrong with his maite-up."
