Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Williams. Titiraukena, Ruatoria. have returned home after spending a few days in town. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Holden. Pounwa, have left for a visit to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Reeves, Mokairau, Pakarae, who have been visiting 'ngland. are due to arrive back in Gisborne on August 3. Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Rathbone. Waipawa, have returned home after a visit to Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Chrisp. and their daughter, Mary, Harris Street, have left for a visit to Auckland. Mrs. W. D. Morley and Miss June Morlev, Harris Street, have left for a visit to Wellington. Terrace Station, Whatatutu. have returned home after a visit to the coast. They were the guests or Mrs. G. Elvers, Tokomaru Bay. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Hindmarsh. Hicks Bay, have returned home after a short visit to Gisborne. Mrs. J L. Cowan. Wainui -Beach, is the guest of Mrs. Dawson Muir. Haronga Road. Mrs. M R. McNeil. Tikitiki, has been a recent visitor to Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Barker, Glenroy, Pouawa, have left for a visit to Auckland. Mrs. L. .Tcx-Blake. Mangapoike, is staying with her daughter. Mrs. R. Mrs. Hcdlev Reeves, who has been Having in Gisborne has returned to Tolnga Bay. Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Holden. Rimuroa. have left for a visit to Cambridge. Mrs. A. S. Louisson has arrived from Invercargill to take up residence in Gisborne.

FAREWELL FOR COMMITTEE MEMBER Committee members of the Victoria League met at the home of the president. Mrs. P. Hockley, in Ballance Street, on Monday afternoon to bid Mrs. W. Carrufhers farewell before her departure for Rotorua. Mrs. Hocklev presented Mrs. Carruthers with a spray of japonica and freezias. Bowls of spring flowers were the decorations in the house. The guest of honour was wearing a rose shaded tweed suit, a brown hat and accesories Mrs. Hockley had chosen a navy blue model frock. LITERARY CIRCLE Members of the Literarv Circle of the Gisbrone 'Women’s Club met in the club’s lounge on Monday afternoon. Mrs. V. Clement presided over a good attendance and welcomed Mrs. H. Ho’mes back to the circle. The subject was “Items of interest in recent reading," to which Mesdames N. Hooper, H Maynard. Hutchins. R. L. Gr.av, A. Lcgge. Hugh Jones and Miss E. Scott contributed. Tentative arrangements were made to hold the positioned social evening on August 29. The subject for the next meeting will be “Kipling's Poems." Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. V. Walworth and helpers, DEPARTURE FOR SOUTH Mrs. J. R. Kirk, who is leaving shortly for Christchurch where she will make her future home, was the guest of honour on Monday morning of the Gardening Circle of the Gisborne Women's Club. The rooms were decorated with bowls of camellias, roses and daffodils. Mrs. Samson, the president, welcomed the guests. Mrs. Hepburn, Manatuke. presented the chief guest with a bouciuet of roses. Morning tea was served bv members of the club. Mrs Kirk wore a blue coat and skirt, a matching hat and a silver fox fur. ATTENDED A BULLFIGHT Attending a bullfight in Barcelona Spain, was an exciting part of a Continental tour for Mrs. J Harper, who. with her husband. Flight-Lieutenant Harper, and their seven-month-old son, •Tames, returned to Wellington by the R-mgitane. Mrs Harner. formerly Miss Marcelle Haughey, Wellington, has been overseas for 16 months. Flight-Lieutenant Harner has been attending a course in England. Travelling 3500 miles by car. FlightLieutenant and Mrs. Harper toured five countries Belgium, France, Switzer lan-h Italy and Spain. "We saw the bullfight in Barcelona at. Easter. AH the senoritas looked magnificent and were cheering for their favourite matadors," said Mrs. Harper.

“There was an enormous crowd there. The matadors looked verv glamorous dressed in white with "littering brilliants on their jackets. They killed six b”11s that afternoon. It was Sunday afternoon, but that did not seem to matter. The Spaniards go off to church in the morning and attend the bullfight in (he afternoon.

"We naid £3 each for our tickets and wo’— seated beside the president's box. The seats were various prices, but I don't think anv were under £l. Barcelona was a beautiful place, Mrs. Hamer added. The citv had an unusual characteristic in that the buildmgs on street corners were cut back ‘or the first eight nr 12 feet of their height to allow traffic a clear view.

There was a shortage of petrol, which was a gallon, and motorists were limited to two day’s driving a week.

Burland, Patutahi. farewell parties In honour of Mrs W. Carruthers, Mrs. W. R. Kenm invited friends to her home in Whitaker Street for afternoon tea on Tuesday atternoon . The hostess greeted her guests wearing a mist crepe frock. She had decorated her house with bowls of camellias in rose pink shades and japonica. The chief guest wore a tweed suit with accessories to tone. She was presented with a spray of winter roses and freezias. Miss R. Carruthers was the guest of honour at a small farewell party on Tuesday evening, when Miss Pam Kemp invited friends to her home in Whitaker Street. The guest of honour wore a gold shaded woollen frock and Miss "‘Kemp a black lace frock over blue taffeta. Competitions were held. The winners being Misses Beth Cameron and Mairie O’Meara. Bowls of rose pink camellias and japonica decorated the roomsMETHODIST FIRESIDE CLUB The monthly meeting of the Methodist Fireside Club was held on Wednesday evening at the Parsonage. Gladstone Road.
