RECURRENCE OF FLOODS ON WEST COAST OF SOUTH ISLAND
(P.A.) GREYMOUTiI. July 24. With 4Jin. of rain recorded at Greymouth since Saturday night minor hooding has occurred on the West Coast with a prospect that the sudden change to warmer temperatures will produce a thaw in the mountains with more serious effects. So far the Midland railway line to Canterbury and the Main South Road to the glaciers are the only transport routes closed. The Midland line, which is just recovering from the severe damage of the May floods, is blocked by a relatively small slip at Aratika, near the Kaimata hydro-electric dam. The Christchurch to Greymouth railcar this morning was held up by the slip. Passengers were brought on to Greymouth by road, arriving three hours late. It is expected that the slip will be cleared early this evening. The blockade to the Main South Road results from a small washout at Evans Creek.
