England’s Fighting Innings Dimmed By Disaster

(10 a.m.) LONDON, July 24. A disastrous half-hour at the end of the fourth day’s play in the third test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, today dimmed England's chances of beating the West Indies. In that period three English wickets fell and the great fighting cricket of the previous five and a half hours was dissipated. With five wickets in hand, England is only 15 runs ahead of the West Indies and nothinfg short of a miracle can save it.

England went to tea 78 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. At the beginning of the day’s play, the English deficit had been 248 runs. Washbrook. Simpson, Parkhouse and Dewes were the heroes of England's fight today. Washbrook and Simpson made an opening stand of 212—the best start in any test match for England since Hutton and Barnett scored 219 against Australia on the same ground in 1938. It also established a new record for the first wicket by either side in matches between England and West Indies. Washbrook and Simpson were together for 320 minutes and were out within a few minutes of each other. Parkhouse and Dewes carried on the good work with a century third-wicket partnership but the loss of Parkhouse was followed by the quick dismissal of Yardley and Insole, leaving England in a difficult position, with Dewes the only recognised batsman remaining.
