SYDNEY AGAIN FACING GAS SHORTAGE
(11 a.m.)
SYDNEY, July 25,
City and suburban gas supplies are again threatened from two causes. Floods which have already cut Sydney milk supplies to 50 per cent of normal have also covered the railway lines around Maitland from which the main supplies of gas coal for Australia’s eastern States are obtained. A dispute between the gas employees and the companies supplying domestic gas for use in Sydney and Newcastle has resulted in the managements issuing a warning that interruption to gas supplies will be inevitable and complete failure threatens unless the employees modify their attitude. .
The workers decided at a recent mass meeting not to work more than 40 hours weekly, not to permit day workers on shift work and not to allow shift workers to do an extra shift.
This complete ban on overtime is sieged to have reduced the man-power oelow a reasonable minimum.
